Vascular Lesion Treatment in San Clemente, California
Vascular lesions, also known as spider veins, port wine stains, or telangiectasia, are small dilated blood vessels that form directly under the surface of the skin. Vascular and pigmented lesions can appear as a single thread or a small cluster-like spider web, hence the nickname spider veins.
Most cutaneous vascular lesions are hereditary while others are a result of aging, hormones, and sun exposure. They are typically benign and don’t pose any health risks, however, some patients will seek treatment to address vascular lesions for aesthetic reasons or potential complications involving skin ulceration and bleeding or any discomfort that may occur.
Sitting or standing for long periods of time can exacerbate them, and since vascular lesions are not necessary for circulation, many individuals will have them removed to improve their skin’s appearance.
Types of Vascular and Pigmented Lesions
Vascular lesions are vascular malformations located in the skin while pigmented lesions are recognizable as discolorations of the skin’s surface. The following are some forms of vascular lesions that patients most commonly need to address:
Port Wine Stains
These superficial vascular lesions are capillary abnormalities of dilated blood vessels that can leave red and purple blotches on the surface of the skin.
Hemangiomas
A hemangioma is a benign vascular lesion comprised of abnormal blood vessels that present as red or purple blemishes on the surface of the skin.
Spider Veins (Telangiectasias)
Spider veins are tiny blood vessels that can become visible as thin red and purple squiggles on the face, chest, and legs.
Varicose Veins
These blue, reddish, and purple leg veins appear on the skin in twisted shapes. They can grow more visible with age.
Venous Malformations
Venous malformations are congenital misshapen vascular abnormalities that don't function as intended and present as swollen or bulging blue or purple skin discolorations.
THE ASTANZA LASER
During treatment, our ASTANZA laser will direct pulses of light energy onto the unwanted vascular lesion. The laser light is absorbed by the hemoglobin in the blood, causing the blood to vaporize and collapse the vessel without damaging any of the surrounding skin tissue. As the unwanted vascular lesion breaks down, it becomes less visible and eventually disappears.
HOW LONG DOES TREATMENT TAKE?
Vascular lesion removal is a very quick procedure that lasts under 15 minutes depending on the size and number of lesions being treated. Most patients experience optimal results after 2 to 3 treatments.
AFTERCARE AND RECOVERY STEPS
Patients may experience bruising, slight discoloration, and redness of the treatment site following treatment. These side effects will gradually fade over the next two to three weeks following treatment. We recommend staying active and exercising daily to prevent additional vascular lesions from forming.
